How to Cross-Pollinate Chilli Plants and Create Your Own Variety

cross pollinating chillies

Cross-pollinating chillies is one of the most rewarding projects for a home grower — and it’s simpler than it sounds.

Step 1: Choose your parents. Pick two varieties with traits you want to combine (heat, flavour, shape, colour).
Step 2: Emasculate the flower. On the “mother” plant, select an unopened flower bud and carefully remove the anthers with tweezers before they release pollen, preventing self-pollination.
Step 3: Collect and apply pollen. Gather pollen from an open flower on the “father” plant using a small brush, then dust it onto the mother flower’s stigma.
Step 4: Tag and wait. Mark the pollinated flower with thread or a tag so you know which pod is your cross, then let it mature and dry fully.
Step 5: Save and grow. The seeds inside are your F1 hybrids — plant them next season to see what traits emerge, then stabilise the line over several generations.
