Water pH

ph

You can have the best soil mix, the right nutrients, and perfect watering habits — but if your pH is off, none of it matters. pH controls whether your plants can actually access the nutrients in the soil, and peppers are particularly sensitive to getting it wrong.

Chilli peppers thrive in a slightly acidic environment, ideally between pH 6.0 and 6.5. Stray too far in either direction and you’ll start seeing nutrient lockout — deficiency symptoms that look like a feeding problem but are actually a chemistry problem. Adding more fertiliser won’t fix it.

If you’re on municipal water, chances are your tap water is alkaline. Testing and correcting it before every water is a habit worth building early. A few drops of citric acid solution is all it takes to bring it into range.

Test your water. Test your soil. It’s the one variable most beginner growers overlook — and the one that explains most mystery problems.
