Common Chilli Pests in SA (and How to Deal with Them Organically)

Chillies are tough, but a few pests love them as much as you do. Aphids cluster on new growth, sucking sap and leaving a sticky residue — a strong jet of water or a diluted soap spray knocks them back fast. Thrips are trickier: tiny, fast-moving, and responsible for silvery, distorted leaves and scarred pods. Blue sticky traps help you catch them early, and neem oil applied in the evening breaks their cycle without harming pollinators. Spider mites thrive in hot, dry conditions — look for fine webbing and stippled, pale leaves. They hate humidity, so regular misting plus a neem or insecticidal soap spray usually sorts them out.

The common thread: check your plants often, catch problems early, and reach for neem oil, soap sprays, or a hose before anything harsher. Healthy, well-fed plants also shrug off pest pressure far better than stressed ones.
