Germinating the seeds

seedling

Chilli seeds are stubborn by nature — but give them the right conditions and they’ll reward your patience.

Start with a quality seedling mix or a blend of coco peat and perlite. Moisture retention matters, but so does drainage. Sow seeds roughly 5mm deep and water gently from below by sitting the tray in water rather than pouring from above.

Warmth is everything. Chilli seeds germinate best between 25°C and 30°C. A heat mat makes a significant difference, especially in cooler months. Keep the growing medium consistently moist but never waterlogged — damping off is a real risk if things stay too wet.

Cover with a humidity dome or plastic wrap to retain moisture and heat. Most varieties will show their first signs of life within 7 to 21 days.

Once the seedling breaks the surface, light becomes the priority. Remove the cover and move them somewhere bright immediately (but not direct sunlight).
